Children's Dentistry Portland, OR![]() Importance of Pediatric DentistryPrimary or “baby” teeth begin to surface during the first six months of life. By age six or seven you child will begin to lose the first set of teeth, and their secondary (permanent) teeth will begin to show. Without regular visits and proper oral hygiene, your child may develop possible oral decay or dental diseases. To prevent this, we provide a wide variety of treatments, some of which include:
We offer you the professional advice you need to take care of your child’s teeth at home. We will teach you how to properly floss and brush their teeth, and provide you with any additional information specific to your child’s needs. We address eating habits and the harmful effects of foods rich in starch and sugar. As your child gets older, we pass this information off to them, setting the foundation for good oral hygiene practices that will follow them into adulthood. Good Oral Hygiene for ChildrenIt’s important to pay special attention to your baby’s primary teeth. Monitoring the growth and development of their teeth and jaw is imperative to their future dental health. We suggest a first trip to the dental office at one or two years of age. We know this can be a tricky and sometimes frightening endeavor. That is why we have built a warm, child-friendly waiting area, with toys and storybooks for them to play with while you wait. We also offer free wifi to help you make the most of your visit. For infants who are nursing or bottle feeding, we suggest you incorporate a hygiene regimen as soon as possible. Using gauze or a soft wet washcloth, wipe down their gums before any teeth begin to surface. Once they begin to show, keep them clean with a specialized toothbrush that is small enough to accommodate the size of their teeth. When your child is old enough, we can keep their teeth healthy by regularly removing plaque build-up and food debris. Make sure they are brushing and flossing regularly at home. Some parents find it easier to turn this into a game or some fun activity. For example, a visit to our office can be a fun adventure that results in a tooth-friendly reward!
